SARS-CoV2, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, now simply known an Covid, is the virus that is genetically related to the coronavirus responsible for the SARS-CoV1 outbreak of 2003. SARS-CoV1 infected over 8,000 people from 29 countries and territories, and resulted in at least 774 deaths worldwide. The Covid pandemic, which began in 2019, has affected every aspect of life and has resulted in 6,849,154 deaths to date worldwide.


 

Note: The Magnifier, Annotator, and Puzzler in this lesson are from news stories from 2020. Teachers can encourage students to investigate how Covid played out in schools by having them check the Nation’s Report Card that came out in 2022 and by investigating the current CDC statistics that track hospitalizations and deaths of brown and Black people and Native Americans as compared to other groups.
