Create Your Own Story

In more recent years, much of the progress made by gender equality movements has been achieved by being in conversation with other movements on social media. In this final activity, you will have the opportunity to create your own front-page news article on a modern-day social movement that has gained attention through social media, such as #MeToo, Black Lives Matter, climate change, pro-life and pro-choice causes, March for Our Lives, and the Tea Party movement.

Directions:

  1. Answer the following question in your piece: How did citizens use the power of the media to make their voices heard and how effective were their efforts to bring about change?
  2. Choose one of the images in the carousel and link it back to your piece in some way—be creative!
  3. Research two or three articles on your topic using reliable news sources that you have used in class or your teacher recommends.

As you write your article, keep the following in mind:

  1. Length: 2–3 paragraphs.
  2. Include basic facts (who, what, where, when, why, how).
  3. Decide which news format you would like to use, newspaper or website.
  4. Give your article a title and add a headline (a good headline catches the reader’s attention in some way).
