Create your Own Social Media Post
American Indian life under European settler-colonizers has been a subject of US journalism since the 1800s, but little of this recorded journalism reflects the thoughts, experiences, and perspectives of American Indians themselves.
The Assignment
In this scenario, you are the social media producer in your newsroom. Your editor has just assigned you to create a post that highlights important stories of American Indian history, including stories that were left out of popular US media accounts or whose stories were inaccurately or insensitively told. You will write the original social media post and then imagine what sort of comments might follow.
Directions
- Choose an image from the carousel to accompany your post by clicking on “Select Image.” As you look at the image, reflect on the historical events and people involved and specific decisions made by the photographer, such as the subject and camera angle.
- Write a short caption for your social media entry in which you say something about the way American Indian voices and perspectives have been left out of popular US media accounts.
- Then “post” up to 5 comments to show users reacting to your post. Thoughtful social media posts engage the reader.
